I am seriously overweight and this is the year for me to change - I have already changed my *diet*/eating habits drastically - out went all the choccy/crisps/junk food/fizzy drinks. So far, so good. Unfortunately, last year, I slipped a disc and I am scared to carry out certain exercises as I still have no sensation down my leg. Plus, I have PCOS (which screws around with my girly hormones too) - Am I a lost cause?! *haha* I was truly inspired by last year's *THE BIGGST LOSER UK* - Jodie looked incredible at the end and infinitely happier for it! So; from a medical standpoint - what's the next step for me, please...? *All answers appreciated -THANK YOU*

hi i have pcos as well and it's much harder for us to lose weight ive started a diet of my own (a bit like weightwatchers) i have cereal for breakfast if i feel i want some, then i have slimfast soup for my lunch(it fills me up more) then i have a normal dinner like stir fry or speggi bolanise (just a normal dinner but not loads)
then a treat (like a mini choch bar)

and i dont care what people say this works for me ive lost 1 1/2 stone so far and i'm more tonned on my legs if that diet dosnt work for you make your own up, just make sure its less than 1500 cals a day or do a low gi diet as thats supposed to be really good for pcos women.

i also do between 30 mins - an hour days excersie (treadmill)
find an excersie you can do and do it for however long you can even if its just a brisk walk or a bit of cleaning around the house the most imporant thing is to get moving.

whatever you decide good luck its hard work but worth it x

First of all, find a eating plan you can actually stick with. One that doesn't totally deprive you of the foods you enjoy. The only ones I know of that do this is Weight Watchers or the Richard Simmons Food Mover Plan (which is based on exchanges and portion control of the American Diabetes Association).

With both these plans, there are no strict guidelines, except that you stay within the limits of what you are given. Another key element is that they make you balance your meals. I have recently started the Food Mover and it makes me realize I have to have a certain number of fruits and veggies a day, along with the protein, dairy & starches. Back when I did Weight Watchers, they DID encourage this, but somehow I would slip into calculating all my "points" towards protein and starches (very little fruit & veggies). Maybe that is why WW never worked for me - - - because it was TOO flexible and I cheated.

Also, with the Food Mover, you have this neat compact that fits in your purse and when you eat a meal, you just close the windows that count off your exchanges for the day. Depending on your weight, you are given different cards to insert into the compact - - - which allows balanced portions for 1200, 1400, 1600 + calories. You also have 8 little windows to close for each 8 oz. cup of water you drink. It even gives you a reminder window for exercise, taking a multi-vitamin and 7 motivational phrases to say to yourself each day (maybe a little corny, but some people need that extra push).

I think drinking the 8 glasses of water a day and walking daily is very important in regards to how quickly the weight comes off. My downfall has always been 2 things: not exercising along with the diet and jumping on the scales too often. This time, I'm not even going to weigh myself for a long, long time.

Every time I looked for the "magical" diet, I was always discouraged because I couldn't eat half the crap or the crazy recipes they listed in the diet book. I still don't see what's so great about that stupid South Beach Diet . . . .(rolling my eyes).

So that is my advice. I want 2007 to be *MY* year too! The weight I gained after having kids never left my body - - - and my youngest is 17!!! Email me at tphil6565@yahoo.com if you want a dieting buddy.

By the way, my daughter has PCOS too (she's 17). I found a pretty neat website that you can visit that offers free support. They may also be able to share their weight loss experiences on their message board with you: www.SoulCysters.com

Other resources:
www.richardsimmons.com
www.weightwatchers.com

P.S. The little Food Mover compact and instructions can sometimes be bought off of ebay for a little cheaper. Good luck!

Hi there its good that you have cut out the rubbish in your diet thats a very good start.
I have pcos aswell and yes it does mess up your body but you can still lose weight though I have lost 2 stones in weight following the slimminig world plan.
Exercise I would sugest gentle walking and swimming as these dont put too much strain on you.
I would sugest you go and see the dr about the problem in your legs though before you start an exerise plan just to make sure everything is ok good luck

Eat smaller portions of better quality food. Lots of fresh vegetables & chicken / fish (not in batter!) Try to eat organic food whenever possible, that's great that you have cut out all of the junk. Drink plenty of water & cut out tea & coffee. Try not to eat sugar or refined flour & watch your salt intake. Importantly don't be cross with yourself if you go wrong, just try to eat healthily as much as possible but remember that you are only human & there are temptations out there. Swimming can be good exercise or yoga, try to find something you enjoy or you may not stick at it. Strenuos exercise isn't always necessary as it doesn't suit everyone & if you slipped a disc you need to be careful. Weight loss doesn't happen overnight it is a process, PCOS is a nuisance as this doesn't help matters, but I don't think anyone is a lost cause unless they give up all hope & refuse to help themselves. Paul Mckenna has a good weight loss CD. It helped me & his book also helped me to understand a bit more about my relationship food. I was once a size 20 & now I am a comfortable 14. Chew your food properly, don't stuff it down as you won't realise when you are full. Never starve yourself, if you are hungry eat something but do it consciously! Good luck. I know you can do it!

Try a detox program conducted by Art of Living Foundation. It is incredible!!!!!!! i treid it out and lost 8 kgs in one months time. But, u need to make serious committments and strictly follow the diet (which is very harsh), Yoga and some other routines!!! Keep stress away by practising breathing exercises!! Did you know that stress lowers the metabolism of the body which results in increase in fat deposits under the skin!!?? Drink atleast 3 glasses of water early in the morning(with a few drops of lemon juice and prefarably warm water). A friend of mine who had attended with the same problem of weight gain and slip disk went back happier after the AOL course!!!! you cannot and should not cheat if u want 100% results from this detox program which not only detoxes your body.....but also helps you loose weight by making life more healthy!!
P.s. For more info on art of living and their an AOl center closest to you check their official site www.artofliving.org

Change your diet to the following:
Nuts
Beans
Skimmed dairy - including low fat yogurt
Oats
Eggs
Lean meat - fish, poultry, chops, loins, steaks
Olive oil
wholemeal bread, wholegrain rice and wholemeal pasta
Berries

The food above cuts down fat.

Avoid food with the following ingredients as much as you can (you will also find a lot of these in junk food):
Vegetable oil
Salt
Sugar (probably the most obvious one)

When you start eating 6 small meals a day then you know the diet is working. Drink plenty of water (4-6 pints at least a day). You sometimes feel 'hungry' when in fact you are actually 'thirsty'.

Yes, a slipped disc and excess weight can be a problem!

The shortest answer to this is to go onto a vegetarian (not vegan) plus fish diet. Cut out all carbo sweets, cakes, pizzas etc...Any shortage of vits. or minerals, make up with a 'once a day' tablet.
Also, drink lots of water, which will aid the detox. of your body.
Gentle, but consistent exercise with plenty of walks.

Well the basic thing you must look at for weight control is if you take in more calories then you burn off then you will put on weight... simle as that. What you can do as well is make sure you have 4-6 smaller meals aday rather than three big ones as your body needs energy throughout the day and can burn it off easier this way.

1. since u have already cut on the titbits, dont pursue anymore dieting. this is to let ur body adapt to this new situation until u r totally comfortable wit it.
2. next, thing u shud do is an exercise routine. start with easy to follow exercise. try a workout video where by u can b comfortable to do it at home. not everyone is comfortable to exercise outside. give ur body time to adjust to it.
*this is very important, if u keep pushing ur body to do too much work without giving appropriate time to adapt, u will easily give up on ur diet/exercise
3. while adapting to the exercise routine, eat normally as u currently do but follow meal orders of 3-5 small meals instead of 2 big meals. u may eat whenever u r hungry but just make a point of eating to retain from hunger. in other word, small meals again. if u let ur body too long in hunger (low blood sugar), ur metabolisme will drop. this wont help u to lose weight. at the same time, drink lots of water as 1g of fat need 10ml of water to dissolve.
4. when u finally get to adapt to the exercise routine n this new eating habit, u may start monitor what u eat. including cut on the fat, add more vege etc.
Good luck
