Won't the object just remain stationary?

The force is proportional to the acceleration and not the velocity. Therefore, is there is a net force of 0, that object has an acceleration of 0. Thus, if the object was moving to begin with, it will continue to move in the same direction at the same speed.

Add the forces together to get the resultant force vector. If you have force 1 and force 2 of the same magnitude but acting in opposite directions, they totally cancel eachother and the object is unafftected by either force.

Think about a car moving down a flat road.

Gravitational Forces try to push the car downwards, but the road balances the force from gravity - by supplying a reactionary force upwards. These forces are equal but the car still travels down the road.....
