Something really soft.. I know that Pine is supposed to be pretty good.. anyone know? I'm talking about for the purpose of making small, 6 inch high, figures

I recommend something soft like pine. It really depends on what tools you're using. Oak is very hard, so unless you're an experienced carver with good tools, it's hard touse. If you're just making small figures, I think pine would be the way to go.

Oak. It is best because it is the hardest. Plus after you carve it you dont have to worry about denting.

Oak usually works very well.

basswood is good because it has little grain.
