I think its criminal the way the advertisers, etc., represent the female today...not only unhealthy but totally unattractive..what a shame that young women feel the need to compete with such a negative body image....maybe if we stop buying the magazines, and products they are selling, they'll get the hint!!

Not directly. I think it's more for just show, they want to see how skinny they can get so people will notice them more. For example...do you ever hear people talking about average or plus size models and their looks? No, because the media seems to be more interested in the dangly bones that walk the runway and this is just a boost to their ego and they push their limits until they croak.
As for young girls, they see this as a thing of beauty because that's all the media is pumping out right now, but I don't think the models are doing it to show young girls what they can be like. Most of those models I see in vogue look like their 12 anyhow.

You got to keep in mind models and actress work all over the world. So if they try too hard to preach what you are trying to, the world will lose interest.
In many countries people are actually struggling to keep themselve at size 3 or higher. So to them, the size 0 or 1 models look very healthy.
When I was in eastern Europe, I was surprise by how skinny everyone were.

Hell yes I do it makes me mad. I am a size 18 girl and I feel beautiful looking at those models makes me sick it is so unattractive. Tyra Banks had a show on this just this week she weighs 161 and look how beautiful she is. Something really needs to be done! Were is the thick girl support we live in a world that says if you are a size 10 you are considered plus size whats up with that!

Honestly I am jealous. I would like to see models in more realistic size clothing. I wore those size when I was 14 and I was not unhealthy. Later in life I gained a few more pounds and friends said it was nice to see me look more like a woman..lol.
The unhealthy aspect is the tremendous pressure advertising is putting on EVERYONE to be pencil thin. That is not health because people will go to any method, health or not, to achieve that look.

as most will say - "it's unhealthy for our young generation" but inside most of us wanna be that model. lucky in SA the smallest you can get is a number 6 (not sure bout nr 4) and the average size is 10. i think it's a personal choice and satisfaction within that you have to decide!

I think it's having a terrible effect on women today. I'm not necessarily talking about just girls and young women but women of all ages. The definition of "beauty" in this society is skinny, slutty and stupid. How ridiculous is this? Obviously the tabloid news (TV and publications) are not going to take responsibility for this so it's up to us. Don't buy the crap that supports the lifestyles of these losers and start paying attention to real women who truly make a difference in our world.

Being too thin or too big is unhealthy. Yes, the ultra thin models are setting a bad example, and I must be honest and say the plus size models are too. It's great to be confident about your body but being overweight isn't always healthy, and America is largely an overweight country.

Well, this is a recent craze and in 20 years, these women are either going to be dead or in terrible health. There will be a major backlash at some point. Just be happy with how you are now and you'll be so grateful in the years to come when you stay looking young and have a healthy body and there are women that starved themselves all their lives with early onset osteoperosis, impaired immune function, premature ageing, brittle hair, tooth decay, sallow skin, loss of fertility, depression, fatigue....need I go on?
Stay healthy and happy : )

Even though some girls are naturally thin, It is a shame that girls are starving themselves to be on the cover of a magazine or walk a runway. If designers would just use everyday women of average size and not call them "plus size", then more women would buy their creations and they would definitely sell alot more. I can't understand the designer's restricting themselves.
