If you live near a large airport you might be witnessing a greater amount of Noise Abatement procedures.
What that means is that the airliners, as soon as it is safe to do so, decrease the thrust of their engines so as to create less noise on the population below. This is done shortly after takeoff at a fairly low but safe altitude. When the population is passed or the airplane has gained enough altitude the engines are ramped up again. They do this during the day, as well, but perhaps at night they do it to a greater extent.
Otherwise, there would naturally be fewer airplanes flying at night, which would lead to less noise.

It all depends on flight schedules. Since most people find it more convenient to fly during the day, that's when more commercial flights are scheduled.
On the other hand, if you live near a military air base, you will find that training flights are scheduled day and night and there will be plenty of flights (with the accompanying sounds of takeoffs and landings) both day and night.

More planes fly during the day and you are more likely to have windows open or be outside. At night you will be indoors with the TV on so you won't be bothered by the noise.

I honestly don't think there is a difference. I have seen a jet pass at night and i hear it before i see it. There have also been days that i don't hear jets(but i see) that pass during the day. I think alot of it depends on the altitude in which they fly and the speed in which they travel.

Wrong concept. One thing is that air traffic is less in night hrs. But disturbance is same. day or night does not affect intensity of sound
