It seems to me, we eat an awful lot of food, and alot of people waste the food they take.

Well, they set up the buffet so that all the cheap stuff (pasta based, etc) come first, so people fill their plate up with those types of foods. The more expensive foods are toward the end of the buffett.
The desserts, which tend to be cheaper, are usually also plentifuly, you know, like puddings and jellos. They also use a lot of casserole type dishes that stretch out the meats or veggies.
Most typically, people fill up on the cheaper, fattier stuff, then go back for less of the expensive stuff. Or, people eat less than what the meal would cost if you bought it a la carte.
People pay 12 bucks for unlimited food, but they probably eat around 7 dollars worth.
You usually lose money when the athletes come in!

They save money on wait staff. Plus, the quality of food is much lower. Also, all restaurants produce tons of waste and even if people DO take their leftovers home,it's not like it saves the restaurant any money. The chinese buffet here makes $10 a person,so i'd say they're making out pretty well. That's the same amount you could pay for a dinner at some of the nicer restaurants here.

I think it is a matter of buying lower quality, less expensive ingredients that can make a few different dishes as well as buying in bulk and and not letting ingredients spoil in the cooler but making something with the item and putting it out on the line. Also not everyone is going to pig out. Some people will eat sensibly. But when pasta costs on average $0.32 a serving and you charge $10.00 for all you can eat. You are making out OK. Are drinks included? $0.04 for a fountain drink and then charge $1.25. Basically you make it up in volume

They use the cheapest food they can possibly find. I used to work at a place with a buffet and we would save the food every night and use it the next day. It was so nasty.

The " eat all you can" business is very simple, they just price their buffet based on the menu with the highest price or expensive. For example Sushi is the most expensive @ US$ 10, therefore their eat all you can will cost $ 10.00

I think they buy a lot of cheap foods and probably buy in huge bulk. I don't think buffet food is all that great.

I only take what I can eat, which is not always a lot, but better than puking on the floor!
