I was watching 20/20 the other week, and the FBI or somebody confiscated this guy's computer for hacking or something and they looked at his computer and found all sorts of files and stuff. How can I read my hard drive like they did? Is this even possible? How can I erase my hard drive or rid of the files that I don't want--that clutter my PC?

Reformat is not enough. You need something else to then write over the entire HD to erase the previous data.

One free tool to do this is Darik's Boot and Nuke utility:

To get rid of all material, KILL DISK the HD... the item is available from killdisk.com

The ability to read back as far as ten generations of data is fairly standard for admins. Mostly software driven material based on linux abilities work it. Suffice to say I can't mention sites here, but the technology in general is cheap ( under 100 dollars), but the better stuff is more than a few thousand

If you don't want to wipe your entire drive, this utility is kinda cool. Don't do things the FBI will bust you for is another alternative.
