Bell made the first phone ... but it didn't work. So he gave that to his mother-in-law.
Then he made the second phone and found that the first phone DID work. But he didn't want to talk to his mother-in-law, so gave it to his wife.
He made the 3rd phone to call his wife from work to make sure dinner would be ready .. and discovered the busy signal ... Damn mother-in-law!

Telephone: there is some argument over who invented the first telephone, but it is widely regarded as Alexander Graham Bell, who patented his first "telephone" (as opposed to other similar inventions) on 7 March 1876.

Mobile phone: Martin Cooper from Motorola is regarded of the inventor of the modern mobile phone. The birth of the mobile is accepted as the day the first call was made, which Cooper did on April 3 1973.
