I think you may be approaching this the wrong way. You said you are smarter than you let on...why not be yourself, use your smarts and show your abilities. You may end up with a promotion. If you do quit for whatever reason, never burn bridges. Believe me, you never know where in your business life that guy may show up again at some point. Always leave your jobs on good terms if possible. It helps on your resume and will help you in the future. I say give it your best and see what changes occur.

Why quit?! If you consider yourself 'smarter' than him, then either make a private approach to him, with the intention of a 'heart to heart', soul searcher of a showdown(you have everything to gain from this), or approach a senior manager with an account of your grievance!
Your manager may have all kinds of problems of his own, which he finds difficult to control, and he loses the plot. He may have taken on too much work, and he could welcome a professional offer of assistance from yourself. If you feel you are management material, this could be your chance to shine, and rise above thoughts of revenge!
Try not to 'drop him in it', because your actions may follow your move to another firm with an uncomfortable outcome.

I don't advocate point scoring, especially via set-up stings.
And psychological game-playing is a habit that is best for us to let go of. They often sabotage our outcomes, and are based on imprints from our immature childhood, when we couldn't think like an adult.
Let him go his own way in life and you go yours. Be yourself and use your smartness.
Good luck! Rob

Uncover his tracks, if you want to be known as someone who isn't a team player, and goes behind the bosses back. Otherwise, just suck it up, or quit
