Everyone thanks the academy, but I have no idea who the academy is....Are they actors? Directors? Are they old stuffy men who just don't have a clue? Will someone please clear up WHO the academy is.

The Academy is the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It is made up of about 5500 people who work in Hollywood with the bulk of members being actors. Unlike SAG, people must be invited to join the Academy and membership is generally a sign of a quality career in film making.

The nominations for Academy Awards are chosen by members in each field - for example cinematographers nominate for cinematography, editors for editing, etc. Then the entire Academy votes for the winners. There are some different criteria for nominating things like documentaries, best picture, and the shorts.

So when someone is thanking The Academy, they are thanking the body of members who voted for them to win the award.

When it's not handing out awards, the main function of the Academy is to further the art and science of motion pictures in a variety of issues including technology, legal issues, and many others.
