spiders actually can't swim! they fall from the ceiling into your bath. i found this out recently after checking out a free cd-rom called horrible science from kellogs. most people throw the free cds away but you'll be surprised how much you can learn from them. even if they are meant for kids!

In a bath they fall in and cannot get out, when you wash them down the plug hole they can climb back into the bath through the overflow which is connected to the drain pipe from your plug hole. Thats why people think they can swim back up the plug hole.
Shower trays don't always have an overflow so they drown!
If the water from your shower is very hot then they are getting cooked and die!

spiders fall into the bath from the ceiling or walls, the DO NOT come through the plug hole as there is a water trap there, once in the can't climb out due to the slipperyness of the bath sides.

some spiders can swim, I know this because i have seen it! I was canouing up the amazon and this huge hairy trantula imitation landed on my boat. I knocked it off, and it just swam a little bit (well more of floated and swam) and climbed back on.

The other time I have seen it was when i trapped a spider in a glass in the sink and the only way to get rid of it was to drown it. I filled up the sink, le water in under the glass, and the little bugger just crossed his legs and floated.

i dont know where they come from, it is like where do slugs and snails come from when it rains!

There was a spider on my ear yesterday, scared the living day lights out of me

They like being in the bath. Spiders are clean creatures that only want to have a bath. If they want to have a shower you should ask them first before you stick the showerhead at them.
Did you ever watch that spider program for little tiny kids? It used to have this little song...
#Theres a spider in the bath
a spider in the bath
a creepy crawly creepy crawly spider in the bath
I know hes only there because he wants to have a bath (I suppose you could change this to bath if you wanted...)
Argh hes crawling out the drain...
Now hes crawling up the chain...#
lol

You find them there because they are looking for water.

They fall from above or come over the sides, not up the drain.

But it's freaky to think of the fact that they are in your walls and elsewhere but only appear when they are thirsty.

Spiders do not come up the plug hole (unless they are wearing flippers and an aqualung to get through the U bend).
They fall in from above.

Spiders don't come up the plug hole, they usually fall in the bath. They can 'walk' on water but they can't swim in the normal way. You should see the big monster spiders that we get in our cottage. OMG, they are the ugliest of creatures and I can't stand them. (Shudder!)

They do this because this is where they can have the most startling effect on you! If they could get in the fridge and hide on your milk jug, believe me that they would.

It's the same reason that snakes are always lurking in the grass and bats are always flying at your head.

They fall into the bath while looking for moisture for a drink.
The problem is they cant get out and then some cruel person comes along and washes them down the plug hole
