I have 5 acres, 4 of which grow poison ivy too well. There are vines, sprouts, ...all types. What is THE BEST way to eradicate this so I don't have to worry about my nephews and nieces returning home with an unwanted souvenir from their visit to our home?

The best thing is to go out (well-protected) and rip as much of it out as you can. Don't burn it, put it in a bag to get rid of it. Then hose down what is left or what comes back with a strong solution of Roundup. You'll have to keep doing this for quite a while. Poison Ivy is some tenacious stuff, and the birds are very good at replanting it. I've been fighting it for several years on my property and it still pops up occasionally.

Be very careful about cleaning up after you handle any. The oil that causes the problems is very tough to wash off. They make stuff especially for that; you might want to get some. Any tools, gloves, and clothing that you use should be washed thoroughly also.

Good luck.

If you have 4-5 acres and are serious about getting rid of it, let the goats do it! You can actually rent these goats which will "work" your property until it's gone. The following season you can control the re-sprouts with round-up.

I imagine you'd be living a nightmare trying to "pull" out 4 acres worth of poison ivy (by hand) :)

the best way is to cut it and burn it and add a weed killer to whats left of it so thatit doesnt regrow.just carry the weed killer in a sprayer along with you while you are cutting it and spray right after you cut ech peice so that you dont forget where it was.you can use this stuff called round up,its great.you can find it at your local feed store and tractor suppy company stores.

there is a spray that you can use with water. got it from either home depot or walmart. sprayed the leaves and most of them died. ripped the rest carefully while wering gloves and dumped in a plastic bag. they haven't come back.
