I've used the old filter a couple of times. Rinse it out really well and it is as effective as a new one.

Paper towels will do it too, just cut out approximately the size of the filter and it works too.

Paper towels, newspaper and reused the same filter with just adding more coffee to them.(NOT reusing them wasing them out...ew)
