He was diagnosed with oesophagus cancer last year but recently we have been told that there is nothing more the doctors can do except make him comfortable.

Obviously, we would like to make this birthday special but we are stuck for ideas!

A party is out of the question as he tires easily and he struggles to keep down even liquidized food and he already has a star named after him!

I would be extremely grateful for any suggestions as to how we can show him how proud we are of him and how much he is loved by us all!

First, let me start by saying how sorry I am for what your father and you are going through right now. I lost my mother to cancer less than a month after her birthday. She too couldn't move, eat or drink very much. But I decided we were going to find a way to celebrate, knowing that was most likely her last birthday. I planned a pajama party at her house. She was always in her pajamas, so I decided the family would go over there in our pajamas and celebrate. She got a kick out of it and was very touched. As for gifts, at this point, I don't think material things are of importance, as I ended up getting/taking back the items I had purchased for her last birthday after she died. Bittersweet reminders of her last celebration. What you could do is have your family members make donations to the American Cancer Society in his name. Maybe he can help save someone else's life. That's the best gift anyone can give. Again, very sorry for what you are going through. I know it's a very dark and rough road for him, you and your family

A scrap book of his life and those he cares about. The scrap book will hopefully make him feel better about living a full life. you could also hire some performers (clowns or magicians) to help him relive his youth a bit....you could also make a video with clips from all his friends and family wishing him a happy birthday and maybe they could say something about a good time they shared together. You could have any young kids in the family put together a little singing skit or something for him...reminds me of a song i sang in the 2nd grade for parent night:
i love you little
i love you lots
my love for you will fill 10 pots
15 buckets
16 cans
3 teacups
and 4 dishpans
anyway, just an idea, i am sorry to hear about your father and bless your hearts for caring so much to make this the best birthday ever.

how about a home movie? It won't cost you anything but would prob mean a lot to your dad. Get friends and family to record birthday messages for your dad, maybe reminiss on past times, tell funny stories, or just wish himtheir love, then put them all together on a video or dvd. If you have probs with this you may be enable to enlist someone to help, poss ask advice from a camera shop or technical shop. I'm sure your dad would appreciate the time and effort, and he could sit and watch it in comfort, knowing how special he is and how much people love him. Alternativly maybe make a scrapbook with pictures of family and friends, and things that he likes, get friends and family to write messages to him in it. This could also prove a comfort to your dad.

All the best xxx

My friend was in a similar situation and the family did a similar thing to the girls suggestion above - memories are also a good way to make something special - photos stories etc!

As for the guy at the top - have a bit of respect like mate!

im sorry to hear your bad news about your father but its wonderful you are staying posative about the situation
put together a scrap book (obviously not scrappy though) put all of your happiest memorys in the book and make it a family thing too so get everyone involed! or you could put it onto a cd so your dad can play it on the dvd player too, you can get people who you would invite to the party to leave a special birthday message as well

it will show you will all be thinking of him and you will have something to fondly look back on in his memory when he has passed on.

good luck and best wishes

I think an intimate movie night, or each of your family members do a funny skit or imitation of your father, or maybe even act out a time line of his life or a favorite point in his life (make it humorous) make sure you take lots of pictures.

You may consider a singing telegram, or a in house massage.

Hope this helps, whatever you do.. enjoy your time with him and remember lots of hugs and kisses...

When my mother in law was dealing with cancer, I got her a personal cd player and made several cd's with her favorite music on it. Got a really nice set of headphones, so they were compfortable on her ears. She really loved the gift and it was a way for her to relax and take her mind off of her pain.

if you have any family footage of your childhood, get it all together with photographs and bring them to someone who can put it together as a show.
Its amazing how times passes us by, but this way you can all together reflect on our family life and enjoy what you all went through.
