With my first baby I only managed the first 6 weeks, there are a whole host of reasons why I stopped, but for a long time afterwards I wished I had persevered with it for a while longer.
With my second baby I found it much easier and continued for 6 months.
Third baby was about 5/6 months.
Fourth baby was about 9 months.
Fifth baby only 4 months as she weaned herself really early for some reason.
There is no right or wrong answer to your question, I chose to breastfeed simply because it is so convenient, you always have it and it is always at the right temperature!
Most physicians recommend that you try to do at least the first 6 weeks as that is when your milk is extra rich in all the antibodies and nutrients your little one will need.
If this is your first baby try to go in with an open mind, it can be a lot harder than it looks, the position has to be just right, you have to eat and drink plenty, and get as much rest as you can. All not so easy when you are a first time mum and everything is a little daunting.
Try to do the first 6 weeks, anything over that is a bonus.

I would recommend breastfeeding for at least the first six months, however, I am not one to tell anyone anything about breastfeeding because with all four of my children I was only able to breastfeed for the first week to two weeks. Reasons for quitting were feeling like the baby wasn't getting enough, because of the high feeding demands, and also because of the breast pain. The real decision is yours to make, no one can do it for you, at least if you give it a try you know that you did try. Hope this helps. Best of luck, oh and I will be trying again with this preg.

Stop at around 6 or 7 months, cos once u have to go back to work, and its old enought to stay with a sitter, u cant come home and breast feed it. U need the sitter to be able to bottle feed it...

breast feeding is ALOT of work, I did it for about 6 weeks with my first child and about 2 1/2 months with my second, and with my second I mostly pumped and mixed with formula so that I could get more help from my husband with feedings. Only do what YOU are comfortable with, some nurses or lactation consultants get a little gung ho about breastfeeding and might make you feel guilty(I'm sure not intentionally) about not doing it or quitting to early. Either way, your baby will be fine.

I would recommend at least a year so that they get maximum benefits from it and you don't have to use formula or introduce a bottle, then as long as you both feel comfortable with, personally for me that would be 2 years.
I stopped at 12 months because I found out I was pregnant and thought I would need all the energy I can get!

Experts suggest that breast feeding the first year provides additional health benefits over bottle feeding. Beyond that it's a matter of choice.

Going on 14 months here :)

I plan to continue for as long as my son wants to.

Its a long road though. I started out hoping to make it to 6 months, and then i thought I'd introduce formula.
After I learned about what was in formula, I desided I just wanted to make it to a year.
By 6 months I was thinking 18 months would be good.
At a year, I was thinking more like 2 years...
Now, I'm hoping to make it to 3.

There are just SOOO many benefits to extended breastfeeding, Mystic posted some really great info :)

Before my son, i never thought I'd be one of "those moms". I just could never imagine myself nursing a toddler... but here i am!

I've had two boys and my breatfeeding expiriences were SO different with each of them.
I only managed 6 weeks with my first son, he didn't latch on properly, and I got really stressed out, between the two of us it was useless.
My second son was a whole other story. He took to it right away, and I fed him exlusivly for 4 months, then I introduced purees etc, but I still breastfed. I gave it up at around 6-7 months, he started to lose interest and I wanted my body back, lol.

I just want to clarify that breastfeeding isn't always comfortable, actually in the beginning it usually hurts like youknowwhat!!! But it has great benefits for YOU and your child. I will continue to nurse my 10 month old until she is 2 or if she weans sooner that is fine also - the WHO recommends until the age of 2 for maximum benefit for mother and child!
