I am about to change jobs next month, going from private sector to working for the federal government. What is the fed. government version of 401k, and is it difficult to roll it over?

Roll overs are easy. They have a comparable service called a Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) that you can roll over your pre-tax retirement accounts to. I included the link that describes it in more detail.

The government has what is called the Thrift Savings Plan and you roll into it just ike any other plan. Due to it's immense size, it's got some of the lowest fees available so it's not a bad place to park your money.

You probably don't WANT to put your money in a federal pension. Instead, take your money from the 401k and roll it over into an IRA (Roth or Traditional).
