NO PUFFS! he he
I am a law student, loads of stuffy balls, you want slinky glamour. Tell her to try (DON'T LAUGH) TKMax, she' have loads to choose from, it won't cost more than £40, doubt anyone will have the same and it will probably be designer.
Oh and don't even think of turning up in any old suit, formal dress means dinner suit! bow tie!anything less and you might as well go in jeans and a checked shirt chewing a piece of straw!
If you really want brownie points a piece of elegant jewelry, doesn't have to be expensive, would be thoughtful, a talking point for her and would remind her of the evening when she's old and wrinkly.

It REALLY depends on what state/area you are living in!
Some of the Southern Summer balls still have more of the Southern flair, while those same dresses in the East would be terrible!
Have her go to a local formal shop, and ask the manager, or a sales person that she likes the style of just to be on the safe side!
Another clue would be to look at last years pictures of the Summer Ball, and take a clue from there!

Forget that. YOU should wear a kilt. Go hire one.
Trust me; this is good advice. You will not regret it. It is not possible to have a bad night in a kilt, whatever your surname may be.
By the way, "formal dress" for you doesn't mean putting on an ordinary suit ("lounge suit"). You'll look cheapskate if you do that. It needs to be a proper dinner suit, bow tie, wing collar, the works. If you don't have that you'll have to hire anyway, so why not just go for the kilt?
I await your superlative reports of astonished gratitude for my brilliant suggestion by email after the event. But not the morning after - you will be busy.
Anyway back to the question: I say go elegant, but not prissy. She wants to look glamorous rather than playful, but a bit of sexy is also required. Puffy prom: no WAY.

I would go with an evening gown. Besides the fact that it looks classier it also is more likely to be used in the future. Places like Dillards and JC Penny are coming out with their prom dresses this time of year and that a less expensive option than going to a dress shop. Im in a sorority and we have formals and I know many girls are going with shorter dresses as well so you can check out places like Jessica McClentock. You guys will have fun no matter what you wear! Happy Shopping!

I would definitely go for a beautiful dress in pink or salmon if she s a brunette, black or green if she s blonde or turqoise if she's either or. This way she'll feel safe that she s wearing a beautiful dress even if the others are wearing a puffier one.If it was vice-versa I would feel over dressed and kind of silly. The trick is in the make uo...if she's pale pay her a tanning session and tell her not to let her hair down...the upper the better. A diamonds fake or not are never unnecessary

A prom dress style is going to have her feeling stuffy and probably overly warm. The only time those dresses are ok is when you're 15 or you're the bridesmaid and are forced to wear them.
Strappy heels, silky or slinky dress and a natural glow - that's all she needs to be the most elegent person in the room.
I'm including a link so she can visualize what are the hot items right now: http://www.fredericks.com/category.asp?catalog%5Fname=Holiday2002&category%5Fname=Eveningwear&Page=
Good luck!!

verify shops like Macy's and JC Penney online websites - I basically have been given a suitable dress (initially exceedingly much $3 hundred) at Macy's $40 9 - I basically choose it for a black-tie fundraiser, yet when I even have yet another social gathering to dress up, i'm going to have a dress. Plus, Spring is promenade season so there could desire to be some good revenues occurring.

Something elegant and evening. A one peice dress that looks smart and sophisticated. Not a puffer prom dress.
Debenhams always has good smart evening dresses.
