There is a difference between a single puncture ( blood test or piercing ) and a constant barrage of pricking of the skin. A tattoo needle goes through the outer layer of skinwhere there are many nerve endings. If you focus on the pain it will seem greater even though its intesity will be the same. Personally this was one time when the peripheral neuropathy I acquired from the years I was an active alcoholic worked in my favor. When I received both of my forearm tattoos it was like feeling a fine vibration on my arm.
You may want to mentally prepare yourself by refusing to believe it when people tell you it's gonna hurt like hell.Focus on something else that isn't so traumatic instead of magnifying the sensation that I've heard described as a "rabid jack-hammer pummeling my soul" and you ought to be ok. After geting the tattoo is when you'll notice it differently.

I got one on my ankle and it felt like someone was scraping my leg with a razor blade, but it was tolerable, I guess it all depends on how bad you want it and the area does make a difference, the forearm or shoulder shouldnt be too bad, depends how meaty the area is too...the closer to the bone the more pain. I think you shouls go for it if you really want one. But dont let anyone tell you that there is no pain involved because there is some.

Well, the tattoo process takes longer than the ear piercing... so you are in pain for a longer amount of time. But the pain is not as harsh as the piercings. To me it was like being stabbed with pins on top of a sunburn. It hurts, but it is bearable. If it is not a a real fleshy part of your body, like on the spine or ankle, the pain is a little more intense as you can feel it on the bone, well I did anyway.
Tattoos are forever.... as you make your selection, think about the questions your grand kids will ask about it.....

Tattoo's tend to burn in the beginning but as the artist progresses the pain subsides and can become very addicting.
I would say that pierced ears and blood tests are more painful than tattoos.

It's a different kind of pain, not bad pain.
The tattoo on my shoulder didn't hurt enough.
