Never heard about the code. I am with lloyds and use their internet banking facility for everything. Not sure which other banks provide this facility or how good they are but i'm sure you'll have to ring or visit your bank to set this up. One trick i use when companies want to put me on hold, is to request they ring you back.
You should also know it is possible that companies generate revenue from 0845 or 0870 numbers so the longer they keep you on the phone the more they make!

For a start... If you need to call a banks call centre use the access number designated for use when you are abroad - it makes no difference other than it's cheaper.
Internet banking is great. I can say that because I just started using it today. Everything is at your finger tips and if you need to contact the back you can do so by secure email rather than clocking up the money calling them.

Try the say no website someone else has listed or when it asks for selections keep pressing the star key it messes up their IVR systems and gets you through to an adviser quicker. After that you are in the lap of the gods.
It always helps if the person answering speaks English properly and can understand your accent.

Well, I've learned to use a speakerphone, because I can't stand holding a phone up to my ear. I also would try calling the local branch's customer service.
