He's only going to be out for 2-3 weeks and is expected to be available for opening day. It's not a bad injury, just a muscle pull.

I think too much emphasis is placed on things like "back by Opening Day".
Abreu is going to play an important role in the Yankees 2007 season. If he misses the first week of the season but is 100% recovered for the remainder of the year, then it is WELL worth it to give him the time he needs as opposed to having a nagging injury hang with him that reduces his effectiveness to 95% or worse.
The 162 game schedule is long grind. Rushing a guy during the heat of a late September pennant chase may make sense, rushing a guy for Spring Training makes none.

It was reported in the Star Ledger that he'll be ready by Opening day. They don't want to rush him so he'll be used sparingly in Spring Training.
