The thing about cheer-leading is that you can be a cheerleader by yourself or with a group of any number of people. In that sense, it can be an individual sport. Obviously you need groups or teams of Cheerleaders to build human pyramids and do some of the cheers.

In Football,Baseball, etc., you NEED to rely on the others in your team to complete a pass, swing the bat, guard the goal and those kind of things.

That is why Cheer leading could be considered even more competitive! Maybe also because Cheerleaders don't get the recognition that the players get and so they feel they must "outperform" everyone else in the group.

I think that Cheer leading is an important part of sports! I'm glad they're always there!

Cheer leading is not a sport. It may be competitive, but a real sport is a game that has rules, guidelines, an outcome based on skill and a winner and loser, not to mention a one on one personal action and combat against another rival team. It shouldn't even be considered a sport during a cheer leading competition, as it is just a contest not an actual game. Millions of fans watch football, baseball and hockey...there is no comparison. When is the last time you saw the whole world sit around and watch a cheer leading meet like they do for the Superbowl?

Until the movie Bring it On came out, many many MANY people didn't realize that competitive cheerleading existed. They just saw the girls out on the playing field or on the court cheering for the teams. It's not that it isn't a cometitive sport, because I have seen what those kids can do and WOW....it's just not as big a focus as the more prominent and popular sports are. But when competitive cheerleading competitions start raking in as much $$ as one professional football game, then you'll see more of it.

It does require a lot of physical skills but for now it is seen as a secondary sport, something performed during the sports u mentioned.
