Since there are so many ways people can avoid dealing with others due to the increasing reliance on technology...has it created a generation of self-obsessed people?

Interesting answers so far, keep em coming!

My angle is that technology can cause greater narcissism because it allows people to avoid social contact with others instead allowing people to be more 'alone with their thoughts'

Absolutely, but I think it goes deeper than you suspect.

IMO, the men and women who survived the Great Depression started a pampering of subsequent generations. Each being more self centered than the last and imparting even more to the next.

The technology of which you speak is only a link in the chain.

If you would like to investigate this further, look through some of the questions and answers that fall under the Government, Political, Military and other fields where "MY RIGHTS" are so frequently discussed, and "MY RESPONSIBILITIES" are seldom if ever addressed.

The immature has modeled to the immature and more than technology has cashed in on it.

Secularism - Sigmund Freud etc....narcissistic(without wisdom)

Dogmatic Practice - Cults....narcissistic(without wisdom)

Dr. Spock era has been in office for 40+ years - borrow the books but try not to buy...narcissistic(without wisdom).

Public Schools openly blaming parents for behavior of children while simultaneously not modeling structure including teaching. They spend most of their time filling out government papers for CPS cases etc.....narcissistic (without wisdom)

Why all the labels it's all about lack of personal responsibility and disrespect for that which God warns - exempt from truth and love. All very manipulative and controlling and all masked as "help" yet intruded onto people's lives with a vengeance.

I agree cell phones, telephones, and email have become toys. This generation is controlling and paranoid without remorse for what they have chosen to buy into. The for-mentioned are obsessed with control with all the anti-family preaching and practice going on what else would occur? We should all keep in mind while spending years noticing this behavior the loss of future generations to come not to mention the future of all.

I don't think technology has created the narcissism, perhaps facilitated it. I think it was created by well intentioned, but misguided parents who continually told their children how unique and special they were, from the moment they were conceived, in an effort to build and sustain a healthy self-esteem. Unfortunately, it may have worked too well!

Absolutely. Just look at Myspace. No one has to have any actual person - to - person interaction with anyone. And they post a million pictures of themselves posing and showing off. People have this whole "look at me, I'm more special than you" mentality. But in reality, none of those people are special, because each persons myspace is exactly like all the others.
