Thats true if it is siezed or stuck in some way. The problem is most likely else where. There is a solinoid switch that can go bad sometime. You can use a screwdriver to jump across the contact points, Just put the key in the on position and use an insulated screwdriver.

Gently tap it with a hammer. If this doesnt work short out the points where you get a direct battery flow to the starter. If all else fails soak some WD-40 in it and do all 3 steps again. Go to Autozone cause they got a starter tester and theyll do it for free, somtimes saving you money only having to buy a solinoid or a cable etc.

That depends if the starter is seized up. Hitting it with a hammer may jar it enough to where the contacts are free.
I suggests first trying to junp you car off with jumper cables. Often a lack of amperage will cause a starter not to turn over. Good electricity and clean contacts go along way.
Depending upon the make of the starter there are rebuild kits for them.
Good Luck

yea,i did that before.all you do is lay down and hit the starter, while someone cranks the engine.its sticking, whats wrong.probably the solenoid, not kicking the starter in.

Don't hit it very hard,,just a tap or two. This will only work if the solenoid is hung up or the brushes are nearly gone. You will need a new one right away! :-(=

Hitting the starter with a hammer will break the stator's ceramic magnets. Best check all connections first.
