I work with a dentis who will say "God Bless" to patients when she dismisses them. It's like her way of saying "Take Care". I feel this is inappropriate in a business situation in todays world. What do you think? What would your reaction be?

I was told this is a gray area and if no one has complained, it doesn't need to be addressed. My take on it is, why allow it to continue if it may offend someone? I would rather be proactive rather than reactive.

This is a non-profit dental office. The dentist is the dental director of our particular clinic.

Does the dentist own the business? If so, they can do whatever they want. People select and choose a dentist, and can go somewhere else if they are offended by it, it was not forced upon them to go to that business.

I think that you should be proud of the fact that (instead of the perfunctory "take care" which has become so commonplace that much of the time people don't mean it) you are working with someone who is wishing God's blessing to those she meets. That shows a kind person who is concerned for her patients. I think that you are over-analyzing and getting worked up for no reason. If she was molesting her patients, this would be inappropriate. Wishing them well in her own way, is not. Her patients obviously like her or they would not come back if they were offended. You are an employee and your job is to be caring toward the patients as well. Quit worrying about your personal views and keep things in perspective. The #1 priority is the customer - to be professional is to put your personal feelings aside and do your job to the best of your ability. If it bothers you too much, find another job with someone cold, uncaring and "professionally correct" boss.

I have heard people say things such as "God Bless" or 'Have a Blessed Day". Don't see any problems with that. If a person is offended by it, they do not have to do business with that person or company again. It is possible many of the dentist's patients are Christians themselves so they are not offended by it. Other people may think nothing of it. At most, maybe one or two people may be offended but those patients can always find another dentist.

I think the only person you risk offending at the moment is the dentist who is blessing people if you ask her to stop for no reason.

I don't think that anyone would be offended by being blessed. I am not particularly religious, but I would be touched by someone saying 'God bless' to me, because they obviously are religious and therefore what they are saying means a lot to them. It also sounds genuine, unlike the American typical 'have a nice day' which sounds contrived.

If you are offended by her, then that's different and maybe you should have a quiet word with her. Other than that, don't worry about it.

I think it is great! Good for her! This is not a school setting where it is not permitted; this is a private business. If the patient does not want to hear that, he or she can go elsewhere.

It's fine to say it if she feels like it. If the patients don't like it they need not go to her.
