Are you asking about Oxycontin or oxytocin? Oxycontin is a prescription pain-reliever that often is sold as a street drug and taken for non-therapeutic reasons. It's narcotic, and it can kill you; you also can become addicted to it.

Oxytocin, on the other hand, is nature's natural pain reliever and general health and feel-good substance. Oxytocin is produced in the brain and released when we're under stress, as well as in soothing, healing situations: when we cuddle, get a massage, make love, have an orgasm.

Oxytocin balances the fight-or-flight hormones by lowering blood pressure, promoting digestion and aiding healing. It's pretty much impossible to release too much oxytocin naturally; the worst side effect is probably a lack of sexual desire.

Researchers are experimenting with therapeutic use of oxytocin to treat everything from sleep apnea to autism spectrum disorder, but no commercial drugs are available yet.
