HAve you ever been accuysed of acting white? I find it so idiotic and moronic that a person can sound like a racial group. I'm a Honor rolls student and I'm in Ap. And I'm always getting teased by my Black peers because I like to read and I'm very intellectual. Why has it become acceptable to be dumb in the Black community?

Don't worry about it. I used to get that all the time when I was living in Detroit. My mother is a principal but was an English teacher during my adolescent years so i've always talked with proper diction and was really good in school.

If acting white means not talking in ebonics and getting good grades, call me white all you want.

Forget those people and continue to do what you're doing. What i've found is that 99% of those types of people end up with deadend jobs and pathetic lives.

I've never been accused of acting white. But I am white, so I guess whenever I do act white it's not so noteworthy.

The attitude you describe would certainly be foreign (or disappointing) to people like Washington, Carver, King, Rice, etc. And I think it's foreign to many of my black colleagues and friends; they may have experienced this prejudice, but they didn't internalize it, and went on to be successful.

I guess the only reason I'm sure of is that many people just don't like successful people of any color, and in school, smart=successful. I was definitely teased for reading, etc., in my lily-white community. Is the ostracization harsher in the black community? So I've heard. Why is it? I don't know. Lack of married fathers? Low upward socioeconomic mobility? Rap music? Take your pick.

Because they can't do it or won't do it (due to lazyness most likely) they don't want YOU to do it.

IT: Better yourself, make a life for yourself.

But Girl: You keep rockin. ok ?? With an education you can do ANYTHING you set your mind on. The world will be your oyster.

Just remember, there are lots of people in this world who's only way to feel better is to put others down. Don't fall for that. And in this case it's showing up as peer pressure. Don't fall for that either.
However, it already impresses me that you're too smart to fall for that BS.

So follow your dreams.

Just another example of why the black community is becoming destroyed by it's own hands. Keep doing what you are, and your "peers" will not be laughing when you are successful.

Your friends are young, you will come out on top when you hit your mid 20's. They will still be smoken bud or taking care of like 7 kids with 7 different daddies. There are a lot of smart blacks just find a good group of them

Don't worry too much about them. It's becoming acceptable to be dumb in a white community as well. Education is never dumb. Keep up your studies!

Good point. It is not peculiar to black communities though. Mediocres always label aspirers as excessive, boorish and not belonging. You are currently an indictment on your friends, doing what they wish they could, achieving what they have given up hope for. They will come round to celebrate you later. Keep it up.

Your peers are just jealous of your success-don't worry about it and keep up the good work!!!It is not acceptable to me for any group of people to be dumb.

Read Zadie Smith : "On beauty", really nice and funny book about race issues. Then I don't know why people do that (well, I suppose there are tons of psychological /sociological explanations possible), but I think you shouldn't listen to those people and continue doing what you enjoy.

Don't feel bad because people say the same thing about me but I just shake it off and say, oh well. I know I'm not so I don't need them to tell me that. It bothers the living day lights out of me, just because you act proper and speak proper they assume that.
