It is harmful because we have a balance of proteins that are necessary for tissue formation for all of our organs and body parts. Having additional chromosomes upsets that balance by producing more mRNA and therefore more protein from a number of genes. The body is incapable of adjusting to all of these proteins being imbalanced in the cells and simply cannot grow properly.

In plants, this is much more tolerated and in fact, there are a lot of studies done on dosage compensation, a phenomenon that addresses this issue in part. In fact, in humans dosage compensation is necessary when taking into account men and women with teh two x chromosomes versus the X and Y chromosomes.

So in short, it isn't just about having all the right genes and all the right proteins, it's also about having them in the proper amounts, nice and balanced.

That person is talking nonsense. You actually ger Down's Syndrome if you have one more chromosome. If you have any less than 23 pairs, or anymore than one more, it is impossible for 'you' to exist.

Beacause if you have more you will become a different species. People with one less have down syndrome. Im not sure what happens with one more. But too many more and you are on the verge of becoming a humming bird.
