Its a controversial issue.
And we can't answer it directly considering India in account.
First of all, Indian culture never allows prostitution.
India with her over 5000 year old heritage could never see her women citizens being sold for money.
It is after the post LPG[Liberalization, Privatization, Globalization] period that such concepts and thoughts arouse.
Take the facts about unsafe sex and STDs, it is highly advisable.
But it is India..

Well no one really cares about the goings on with regard to prostitution (among other things) in India, it is too sensitive a matter and the public opinion borders on outright indignation due to cultural and religious censorship. However it is interesting to note that these views are more recent than one may care to believe. Indeed historical documents indicate that around the time of Christ prostitution was prominent in India and was indeed a trade held in high regard.
The governement can't really be blamed because they would rather ignore the issue altogether than bolt headlong into what may very probably be political suicide.

I think it would be a major step for the government to legalize prostitution in india. you see prostitution has a social stigma attached to it, you can go secretely have sex with them, but if your family or relatives, friends come to know of that you will be banished kinda alone everyone will leave you thats how our society is, but once it becomes legal then there would be no excuse why not go and have sex, and that stigma will go and families will get affected by it, government cant take such a major step alone, public's suport is also important.

Legalize the ability for people who exploit children? We are not talking about grown women who have a choice, in India its the norm for little children to be raped in brothels, and for disgusting men who are nothing but child molesters to get away with it. So legalizing it would only give sex offenders a free pass to try to kidnap, and exploit as many children as possible.

If that happened their would be a great uproar from society mainly from those who are against saying that it is against their religions beliefs and blah blah blah. The greatest downside is that their would be a probable increase in pregnancies,it's bad since india is one of the world's most populated

I can understand that some people have no choice in how they earn money, but legalising it will make no difference. Instead they should have outreach programmes at charities where they can talk to them privately without involving the law.
