Cajal is credited with the discovery of nerve cells, which was named neuron by Waldeyer in 1891. Cajal was later awarded Nobel Prize for this.Cajal was the one who said that the basic element of nervous system is nerve cells and he drew good drawings of nerve cells of the brain of bird. He used silver nitrate to impregnate nerve cells and showed the processes called axon and dendrites. He was associated with Golgi, the discoverer of Golgi apparatus.

Neurons known as nerve cells are cells in the nervous system.neurons were first recognised in the early 20th century through the work of the Spanish anatomist Santiago Ramón y Cajal. Cajal proposed that neurons were discrete cells that communicated with each other via specialized junctions, or spaces, between cells.
