Covering the face is not obligatory for Muslim women, but dressing modestly -- modestly as in, in such a way that will not attract men's attention-- is compulsary upon women (Muslims and women of other religions as well).
If you ever see a Muslim women whose face is covered, respect her choice of doing so, but do know that she is not forced to do so by any human OR by God.
However, as I said, she's obligated to cover other parts of her body: her neck, hair, chest region, legs, arms, and body outlines/curves must not show if she wants to be considered a true Muslim. This is only to protect the woman and so that men won't molest her, desire her mianly based on her physical features, and/or look at her with lust and disrespect. No one can deny this because I see this happen ALLLLLLLLLLLL around me at college and elsewhere with females who don't dress properly or wear clothings that are a too tight.
The Quran doesn't just focus on the modesty of WOMEN, however; it also tells MEN to be modest. Modesty comes in different ways, especially in the way a person talks, behaves, thinks, and dresses (outer appearance). Hence, the Quran tells men: "Say to the believing men that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty: that will make for greater purity for them: And Allah is well acquainted with all that they do" (Quran, 24:30).
And it tells women: "And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof [e.g., face]; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments..." (24: 31).
The latter part of the verse doesn't mean she can be "physical" with her father, brother, son, etc; it only means that she doesn't have to be modest with such men (and with women and/or small children).
The Bible is against tight clothing as well!! It demands for women to be dressed modestly and not even to wear jewlery, etc. It also tells women to cover their hair or else, their prayers will not be accepted. Need evidence?
Here:
"Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. Every man who prays or prophesies with his head covered dishonors his head. And every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head...If a w om an does not cover her head, she should have her hair cut off; and if it is a disgrace for a w om an to have her hair cut or shaved off, she should cover her head" (1 Corrinthians 11:3-6).

If not that, then at least this:
"I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God" (1 Timothy 2:9-10).

Hope you get the point!
Peace and blessings be upon you.

Salam :) i'm a Muslim teen living in Canada. I positioned on hijab alhamdullilah and this is for the main area nicely-known right here when you consider that i stay in a huge city with a big Muslim inhabitants. I do get the few ignorant comments and idiots in school however who ask stuff like "yo have been given a bomb under there hahaha". however the toughest area is being diverse out of your friends. Being a Muslim, events, alcohol dating boys wearing revealing outfits etc is haram, and on a similar time as i do no longer opt for to try this besides, this is somewhat awkward to could desire to describe why i do no longer do it to those who evaluate it in basic terms a ingredient of being a teenager and its common to them. Muslims living in Muslim international locations certainly have it extra basic while it is composed of setting up in. And with nutrition this is somewhat difficult yet I continuously attempt to examine the label if i'm uncertain of the substances. yet i would not wanna be the different faith no count how confusing it gets and how diverse i've got self assurance from absolutely everyone else, i'm chuffed to be Muslim :)

There IS a reason - the Hijab or ħijāb (حجاب) is the Arabic term for "cover" - meaning "to veil, to cover, to screen, to shelter"

In some Arabic-speaking countries and Western countries, the word hijab primarily refers to women's head, face, and body covering. But in Islamic scholarship, hijab is given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy, and morality.[1] The word used in the Qur'an for a headscarf or veil is khimār (خمار).

The Widipedia link below debates the wearing of the Hijab.

It is implied by the following Quran passage:

Sura 4:34: “Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in their sleeping places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.”

that and a billowy robe are wore by many muslim women, starting at about age 3, to "prevent the lustful gaze of men"

basically, the men cant control themselves, and punish the women.
