I understand where you are coming from iam haitian and Dominican ,iam brown skin but the darkest in my family and friends . To the contrary they have always complimented on my pretty complexion. What i hate is when man or woman would say you are beautifull or pretty for a dark skin girl as if i was dumed to be ugly since iam dark how stupid ?, or my boyfriend 's mother once told me (she s puerto rican ) ,that at first when she heard i was haitian ,she didn't want us to get together or get married because she didn't want dark babies with nappy hair but now that she met me she see iam not a real negra since my hair is curly and long (how ****** up is that i have never felt so low in my life ?) I 've always had high self esteem and i find myself beautifull but that woman for that moment made me feel terrible .So to constantly hear someone put you down, especially the ones that are suppose to help built yourself esteem is a shame. Don't worry about it !Sorry to say but you'r mom and dad have that( island mentality )black but not dark is good, and
PS I know plenty of man who prefer dark -skin sisters over light onse so don't let it bother you ! If a man is only interested in you for color you don't need him anyway!
IT has always been a double standard w black man and woman Dark is okay if you are a guy but if you a girl you better go hide under a rock ,but it's 2007 only ignorant people still think that way
Good luck with your parents iam sure you are a beautiful and exotic woman !!!

That's so strange! I'm always being told by other white people that I need to get some sun, or that I look sickly (I'm just naturally very pale). You sound absolutely beautiful to me, so don't worry about these old fashioned attitudes. I don't think you'll have any problem in the love department. If any man thought you were too dark, then he's not a man worth having anyway.

I, too, had negative remarks about me as I was growing up. The sooner you realize parents' opinions aren't always right the better you will be. It's good that you see what they say isn't true. You can't change them, but you can make sure you don't become prejudiced.
There are so many skin tones and people do have preferences, but that's OK as long as it's not bigotry. Avoid the bigots if possible. You'll find someone if you act beautiful. Just like I did.

I can't lie and say "that's not true!" because a lot of men (light-skinned AND dark-skinned) seem to have this ideal. It's pretty sad to hear that coming from your parents though.
Historically, during times of black slavery, white people would have generally looked down upon black people and it seems that unfortunately the "white" idea of beauty may have passed down to the black people too!
The media is also somewhat responsible. OK, think about all of the people who are famous for being "beautiful"...they are mostly white!
As for advice, well, it's hard but I suppose you have to ignore the media and your parents to some extent and just be yourself!

My wife's mother always told her the same thing, that she wasn't as pretty as her sisters because she was so dark. Nothing could be further from the truth! It's exotic, sultry, sexy and beautiful. Your parents are buying into the standard of beauty that society and the media have been trying to force down our throats for a long time. However, I think fair skin and blue eyes time as the standard of beauty is over.

It sounds as though your family has a problem of self-acceptance. Personal preference of beauty is just that; personal preference. Just as many would say, "Why do some find red haired women unattractive?, or blondes or women with freckles, or what ever." Love who you are both physically and mentally. Live in joy and acceptance. Many a man will find you attractive if you do so.

Wow!!!! Your parents have serious racial issues. I'm sure you are beautiful. It's like that in my family, where my mom is fair-skinned and my dad is dark skinned. So all of us are different shades. I'm light skin and I have a sister who is dark skinned and I think she is really pretty. I sometimes wish I was dark skinned because when people look at me they think I'm mixed.

I think dark skinned women are rather beautiful and exotic. I don't think you should be worrying! But if you are, then don't settle for anyone, the one you want will be right around the corner at any moment.

I would be mad at them too. You are as God created you and it does not matter how dark or light you are. I am sure you are beautiful so tell all the naysayers to get a brain. You just be happy with who you are.

i have found out that dark skinned women same as light skinned women don't like white guys. That is the reason white guys don't try to hit on or date girls cos they know they will be rejected.
Every girl wants dark guys
