I have a recently aqquired a pet turtle as a gift, but I've read that you shouldn't clean the cage in bathtubs or sinks because of risk of disease spreading.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can clean the cage?
The only other idea I have is outside with a hose, but that sounds quite time consuming... my only option?

I have a 4 ft aquarium for my 1 year old terrapin. While doing a full tank clean i siphon all the water out of the tank and into buckets, then flush them down the toilet. Then I take the whole tank into the bathroom and place it in the tub. I use the shower to wash it down with and to clean any other items eg. - filter, rocks, plants. I then rinse out the bath repeatidly when I am done. I have never had a problem and find this the easiest way to clean the tank.
When not doing a full tank clean, keep the glass in good condition and free from algae by using a magnet glass cleaner. You can buy these from most pet shops.

A turtle tank is not like a fish tank (that you clean 35%)- it should be completly emptied every few days. Syphoning works the best (maybe into a bucket if a sink is too far away). Turtles urinate in the water & deficate in the water. I recommend a really good filter ont the tank as well. You do not need to remove the chlorine or chemicals from the water like fish. Make sure it has a vitalite and balanced commercial water turtle pellets.

I don't see a risk in getting a disease from washing the aquarium in the tub. heck i know someone that kept there turtle in the tub.
I do however suggest using something like bon ami to clean it with that is not toxic. and will give it a good scrub. make sure you rinse well.

you should get a python aquarim gravel cleaner, it sucks up the water and residue and it quickly puts water back in. i do a 35% water change a week. i also a little tirtle shaped water conditioner and vitamin c supplament. there is no need to have to dump out and move the tank every time you want it to look nice. weekly maintence is the best upkeep. i aslo use a fish safe aquarium cleaner for the glass....
