Depends on what you mean by popular. More adults play softball then baseball because it is safer and as we get older we can hit a softball where as we can't hit the baseball anymore. Take my area, there are about 200 softball team (slow-pitch, mens, ladies, and co-ed) for adults, with only 6 baseball teams men only. There are about 60 teams if fast-pitch softball up to age 18, and about the same of AAU baseball. Now if your talking high school ball, I think it is because people see the baseball on TV, me I prefer to umpire good fast-pitch softball. Boom 1 hour or so and your done. Of course if it is not good and lots of teams are not good then it takes forever and it really stinks. Of course the same can be said for baseball when the pitching stinks and everyone walks.

Saying that softball is a "girly" sport is completely sexist. Go to any ballfield in the suburbs during the summer on a friday night and it will be full of coeds drinking beer and having a great time. It is probably one of the more popular sports for adults to play during the summer. However the reason that baseball is more popular on a national or even global perspective is simply because of Major League Baseball. There is no professional softball league (and not likely to ever be) and due to this it will never become more popular. MLB has household names, jersey sales, and more imporantly WORLD CHAMPIONS.

Are you talking about playing or watching?I prefer to watch baseball but I play softball,in my area there are all kinds of softball leagues geared for girls and guys,softball be it at a competitive league or a recreational league is a great way to stay in shape and have fun while playing.As for Booge answer I would like to know if you have ever tried to catch a ground ball hit buy a man 6'5" weighing 250 lbs plus using a composite bat that propels the ball at approx. 120 mph plus then we will see if its a girlie sport.

Well, there actually is a pro-fastpitch league. It isn't shown on TV very much though because it's fairly new. As for why it's not as popular I'd have to say because it hasn't been a big sport for very long. And baseball is the national pastime, so I mean that's pretty hard to compete with.

popular? Well, there's no softball comparison to the MLB, but at the same time there's more people who play softball than baseball.

baseball is an All-American sport that most guys like, while softball is said to be a girly sport. i don't believe that.

not to sound sexist but generally men are better athletes and their sports are more competitive and fast. especially at the high school level girls are less coordinated and less competitive.
