America is not a democracy but a federal republic. This means that a majority cannot take away the freedoms of a minority. If even just one individual feels that his liberty is being infringed he has the right to appeal to the Constitution of this republic and ask the courts to protect him. The majority does not rule. The majority is restricted exactly the same way that any minority is restricted, from impairing the liberties of others.
That is why we are a republic and not a democracy. That is why the Christians are quite wrong if they think their numbers, even if they are a majority, give them a license to re-shape America as what they call "a Christian nation." America is not the turf of any god or any power external to WE THE PEOPLE, and its highest authority is the people's Constitution, the document which does not mention democracy but defines us as a republic.

A democracy votes on every national issue, not once every 4 years. You are a Democratic Republic, meaning you vote for your leaders and in trust them to do what is best for you and the nation.

Direct democracy would mean we voted for the laws and for the president. We do not do that.
We are a republic, we function as a representative democracy, we elect representatives to vote on the laws and we elect electors to elect the president. That's all we vote for is for people to make our decisions for us.

I think American culture is not democratic. People are forced into consumerism without them ever realising. They have negative savings. Preoccupied with youth and beauty and in corporation staffs are treated like slaves for the benefit of the capitalist. Just watch movies like The Devil Wears Prada or Ugly Betty. These are just examples how workers are treated like second class humans and this contrues non existence of democracy.

Well, we are a traditional democracy in that we allow people to vote and those general guidelines, but some believe that we are not a substance democracy. This means that there really isn't political equality since the richer one is, the more say they have in the government. Poor people tend to not vote, and thus the politicians don't care much for their needs, which thus creates polticial inequality
