Munch, who was Norwegian, had an small exhibition in Berlin, in 1892, but it only lasted a few days and was very controversial. He returned to Germany often between 1894 and about 1909.

He was upset when the nazis said his paintings were degenerate. Munch was very fond of Germany.

Munch was lumped in with post-impressionists artists, but he felt himself to be a symbolist painter.
