Open Internet Explorer and click on Tools > Internet Options. Open the Programs tab and tick the checkbox next to "Tell me whether Internet Explorer is the default browser or not".
That's it! And the next time you open Firefox, it will again ask you if you want to make it the default browser or not. Click "No".

Firefox is definitely the better browser, but Windows components do require IE for updating and all. Good you found that out yourself!!

On Firefox go to:

↓ Tools
↓ Options
↓ Main tab
↓ Remove the tick in the make Firefox default browser on startup

Then on Explorer go to:

↓ Tools
↓ Internet options
↓ Programmes tab
↓ Tick make Internet Explorer my default (sometimes a button)

Yo can also go to:

Start menu
Program access
Custom
Ie Explorer as default

But this method can sometime fail future settings.
