Because one cannot assign gender to subjects, can gender be treated as a factor in design of experiments? Comparing drug vs. placebo factor, what is the difference? Can one still apply proc glm data = m_vs_f; model response = gender; run; to the data?

Gender? No. Sex? Absolutely!! There are countless differences between men and women. There are physical differences, hormonal differences, neurological differences, and all of these things could have an effect on a study. When you're looking at sociology or psychology, it's especially important, because the differing brain structures/uses/styles and the differing hormones can make ALL the difference. Also, a lot of sociological/psychological studies are aimed specifically at detecting these difference between men and women, so it's VERY important; it could be the study itself!!

I guess it makes a difference in this question, though, on whether you are referring to GENDER, or SEX. Speaking in terms of definition, there's a difference. Sex refers to physiological differences (like those I've mentioned), while gender refers to society's made-up rules about the sexes. Gender is rooted in personal identity; sex is just biology. If you mean gender, this question becomes moot anyway, because these studies would actually look at the subject's SEX, and possibly use it to determine differences in gender. However, if the study were used that way, it would be because that was the whole point OF the study itself.

Seemingly it is a factor in most studies due to the obvious reaction from both in comparison...Genders are more potentially important in physical aspects moreso than mental, yet mental offers some by variables as well.
