Because there is still a niche in the ecosystem for apes. There are still bacteria and they are the oldest form of life.

Evolution isn't strictly about progression to advanced forms. It is a means of survival. The old statement that "Nature abhors a vacuum" applies here. If an exploitable existence is possible nature will try to fill it.

Stockbrokers are successful people, but it makes sense that not everyone can be a stockbroker. We all have to work in an area that is available and suites our abilities. There are still a few "stone-age" people in the world, as well as stockbrokers and astronauts. Does that make sense? No - oh well, I tried.

Humans and modern apes shared a common ancestor some 5 or 6 million years ago. Ancient human ancestors found themselves forced to live on the newly formed African savannah due to a changing climate (global warming) - this new environment selected those individuals better suited to this new environment (eg. longer legs and an upright stance). The ancestors of modern apes remained in jungle areas that were less affected by climate changes, and so haven't changed as much in the past 6 million years.

Humans did not evolve from apes. Apes and humans have a common ancestor. This common ancestor is no longer around. But, there are still single cell organisms which everything evolved from.

Humans _are_ apes.

Humans are more closely related to chimpanzees than chimpanzees are to gorillas. As a metaphor, humans and chimps are first cousins while chimps and gorillas are second or third cousins.

And in answer to the question, why shouldn't there still be apes? If most people in America descended from Europeans, why are there still Europeans?
