Hi I had the same proble recently with my punto and found out that it was my clutch that was collapsing slowly. Had a new one fitted and its fine.

well you need to get into a bit more detail as to what the problem is.
although the most common problem to were the cars wouldn't move in reverse yet will go forward is that you've got transmission problems 1-you drove car either with little to no oil (trans/motor)
2- car has been driven hard and not so well maintained regularly and is going out little by little till it wont even move forward eventually.

I'd check (in order of seriousness & expense)
1- gear linkage could be worn or need adjustment (free-£100)
2- clutch-ditto (£100-£150)
3-gearbox knackered, it is 13 years old, after all. (£300-£500)

OK first you did not say stander are auto, but i we say auto,, ,,,it could be you reverse ban need to be tighten are the revers ban broke,, too it could be the shifter out of a line ment
