My Classmate told me that Chapter 1 has an"importance of the study" and a "Significance of the study". Could Someone Explain the Difference?

Important isn't necessarily significant...

...importance indicates value, significance indicates effect.

A study may be important to many people but in the end may have little effect...and a significant study may be of little importance but may have a huge impact.

Think of AIDS in America...in the beginning most people did not care about how the disease was spread because it was the "gay"disease. As more heterosexuals became infected, it became much more important to the population at large that we understand and fight the disease.

The early studies were significant as they showed that only direct contact of bodily fluid was the cause of infection, but it was only after AIDS affected the larger population that these same studies became important and accepted. The data did not change but the effect on the population did...
