Vishnu (IAST viṣṇu, Devanagari विष्णु), (honorific: Sri Vishnu) also known as Narayana is the Supreme Being or Ultimate Reality for Vaishnavas and a manifestation of Brahman in the Advaita or Smarta traditions of Hinduism.

The Vishnu Sahasranama[1] describes Vishnu as the All-Pervading essence of all beings, the master of and beyond the past, present and future, the creator and destroyer of all existences, one who supports, sustains and governs the Universe and originates and develops all elements within.

In the Puranas Vishnu is described as being the colour of clouds (dark-blue), four-armed, holding a lotus, mace, conch and chakra. Vishnu is also described as having a 'Cosmic Form' which is beyond the ordinary limits of human sense perception in the Bhagavad Gita[2].

It is also within the Puranas that the information regarding Vishnu's avatars is given. Nine of these avatars, or 'incarnations' are described as having occurred in the past, with one still to happen at the end of Kali Yuga. The Bhagavad Gita mentions their purpose being to rejuvenate Dharma[3] and vanquish negative forces.

In the Dvaita[4] Vaishnava traditions, Vishnu is the Supreme Being. Within the Advaita traditions, Vishnu is viewed as one of many 'forms' of the ultimately formless Brahman, however Smarta adherents worship Vishnu as one of the five principal forms. In virtually all the Sanatana Dharma traditions, Vishnu is worshipped, either directly or through the Narasimha, Rama and Krishna avataras.

In the Trimurti, Vishnu is responsible for the maintenance or 'preservation' of the universe, with the other roles of creation and destruction being under the care of Brahma and Shiva, respectively.

Lord Vishnu : Vishnu is regarded as a major god in Hinduism and Indian mythology. He is thought as the preserver of the universe, while two other major Hindu gods, Brahma and Shiva, are considered the creator and destroyer of the universe, respectively.

As the preserver of the cosmos, Vishnu is believed to uphold the universal laws. Unlike Shiva, who often seeks refuge in the forest to meditate, Vishnu constantly participates in worldly affairs, ensuring that all is well.

When order prevails in the universe, Vishnu sleeps on the coils of Sesha, ruler of the Nagas. As Sesha floats along the cosmic ocean supporting Vishnu, the universe unfolds from Vishnu's dream. But when there is disorder in the universe, Vishnu either mounts his vehicle, Garuda, and battles with the forces of chaos, or he sends one of his Avatars (or incarnations) to save the world.

It is believed that Vishnu would have ten such Avatars, the most popular being Rama and Krishna. The full list of ten Avatars is as follows:

1. The fish Matsya

2. The turtle Kurma

3. The boar Varaha

4. The man-lion Narasimha

5. The dwarf Vamana

6. The warrior-priest Parashurama

7. The prince Rama

8. The cowherd Krishna

9. The sage Buddha-Mayamoha

10. The horseman Kalki

Vishnu is believed by Hindus to use both force and guile to ensure the stability of the universe. His consort Laxmi, goddess of wealth and power, is believed to offer him the wherewithal to maintain the integrity of the world.

Today, Vishnu is one of the most highly revered deities, but he has not always been so popular. In the earliest Hindu writings, the Vedas, he is mentioned infrequently, and is associated with the major Vedic god Indra. Through the later epics, notably the Ramayana and Mahabharata, he is glorified through the Avatars Rama and Krishna.

Does any one know why He was called Vishnu?

The name Vishnu was derived from Visva (universe).
He is the oldest of all dieties, who has no physical form
but represents the Almighty in the form of universe.
When some phisical form for divinity was assumed,
dieties like Indra and Varuna came into being.

Rudra mentioned in the Vedas is considerably different
from that which appears in the Saivite literature. Brahma
is never mentioned in the Vedas, it is only in the
later parts Upanishads that we find his name.

Among the trinity, only Vishnu is known to show his
Visva Rupam (universal form) to the selected few.

Prior to worship of statues, worship of elements of nature
on earth existed. Still prior to that, the entire universe
was worshipped as Vishnu.

VISHNU..

Vishnu is one of the greatest gods of Hinduism, also called Narayana. First mentioned in the Veda as a minor deity, his theistic cults, known as Vaishnavism, or Vishnuism, grew steadily from the first millennium B.C., absorbing numerous different traditions and minor deities. By his worshipers Vishnu is regarded as the supreme God, of whom other gods are secondary manifestations. The early epics the Mahabharata and the Ramayana show considerable Vaishnavite influence. The later Puranas fully elaborate the myths of Vishnu and his avatara (incarnations): Matsya (the fish), Kurma (the tortoise), Varaha (the boar), Narasimha (the man-lion), Vamana (the dwarf), Parashurama (Rama with the ax), Rama, Krishna, Buddha, and Kalkin (who is yet to appear). Vishnu is generally depicted as dark blue in color, crowned, and bearing in his four hands his emblems—the conch, discus, mace, and lotus. His mount is the eagle Garuda, and his consort is Lakshmi, or Shri, the goddess of wealth..
