When people rate others answers what criteria do you use ? Some answers are plainly silly but I dont think an answer is automaticly bad just beacuse you don't agree with it I think people should try to be more objective?

the attitude of the answer. I will use a thumbs up for a badly spelt answer if it is clear the eprson has made an effort.

The criteria for a bad rating is "does it hurt the one who asked the question?" Pain is obvious. You cannot remain objective to that. You can see it in the words, the structure of the sentences, and the outright feeling of hostility.
Does it hurt someone? That is the criteria I use for a thumbs down.
Should the hatred or the viciousness stand out as a piece that would fit Nazi propaganda then I would report it so.
Before Rome was a great nation, the country would send their ambassadors to other nations with this one simple rule. " If it is wrong, then don't do it!" This should be applied to answers on the modern technology of computers in the third millennium as well. This is a good rule for a social structure anywhere. The Yahoo Answer community would do just as well with this motto of the ancient Romans.

I haven't reached that stage yet, but I can see why people get upset or annoyed over the thumbs. There seems to a few who abuse the system.
I like to think that I can accept that other people have a different viewpoint to mine, but I am sure there will be the odd occasion when even I will be tempted to give someone a thumbs down, if their answer is a rude, abusive or unwarranted reply. On the whole, I think I would be more likely to give a thumbs up for a good answer, and ignore the down option.

If I like an answer, informative of cheeky I give it a thumbs up. If I don't it's no bother. Occasionally some answers make me feel upset so they get a thumbs down, I try to avoid that though; free speech and all. Blatant advertising or spam is thumbs down on principle.
I have noticed 'streakers' who seem to run down a list putting a negative on everyone.

Well the thumbs down already given to some of these answers shows just how bizarre and random some of these are.

I wish people would be more objective in giving thumbs down.
A lot of responses that deserve thumbs down seem to get by, and a lot that are perfectly ok answers can get thumbs down.

But you're always going to get illogical and random behavious on anything that is open to the whole community.

The trick is not to let it bother you :o)

You don't have to be so fussy about all these things.
People on this site decide thumbs up and down on their own
arbitrary criteria. It's a waste of your energy to be serious about
to find out the objective criteria.
After all, people in general are not objective but subjective.

If a person is plainly rude then thumbs down, but if they are funny, interesting, well thought then thumbs up. I would never thumbs down for spelling mistakes, it is obvious they are trying hard to get involved, plus we all make some mistakes some times!

Thumbs down to those who have the need to ridicule a good question - I ignore the spelling - as I feel there is a need for them to learn to spell yet it does not warrant a thumbs down.

Thumbs up for good advice with or without spelling correction.

Wish people would take time to use this grading also.

Basically if the other person's answer is misleading, obnoxious, too long, not too the point, completely ignorant or incorrect, not answering the question or just in strong opposition to my own beliefs. THEY WILL GET THE THUMBS DOWN

If the answer is helpful, accurate, understanding, positive and is in line with my own experience and beliefs THE PERSON WILL GET A THUMBS UP.

Obvious stupidity, fraudulent, spam and advertising, adult content and generally not in line with community guidelines abusers will get reported.

I give a thumbs up to good informative answers, or witty ones if it's a fun question, and thumbs down to people who are rude and insulting, or technically wrong.

Any answer that makes me laugh. Answers with well presented information. I don't bother with thumbs down because even if people annoy me I think they are entitled to their views, and they might be having a bad day.
