The pill is one of the most effective reversible methods of birth control. Of 100 women who use the pill, only eight will become pregnant during the first year of typical use.* Fewer than one will become pregnant with perfect use.** Maybe slightly less effective for overweight women.

Certain medicines and supplements may make the pill less effective. These include

* the antibiotic rifampin. Other antibiotics do not make the pill less effective.
* certain anti-fungals that are taken orally for yeast infections
* certain anti-HIV protease inhibitors
* certain anti-seizure medications
* St. John's Wort

Talk to your clinician about the medicines you already take before you get a prescription for any prescription method of birth control.

Vomiting and diarrhea may also keep the pill from working. Ask your clinician for advice. Until you are sure, use an additional method of birth control.

It is very important to remember that the pill does not protect against sexually transmitted infections. Use a latex or female condom along with the pill to reduce the risk of infection.

Sorry that the pill didn't work for you. Visit your doctor. Best wishes and take care.

Well the pill isnt 100% effective, but certain medications can react with it to decrease this effectiveness even more, also, another thing which some people dont realise is, if you dont take the pill at the same time every day this can also increase the chance of it not working to its full potential...in fact, thats how I came into being as my mother was also on the pill and fell with me.

Every type of pill is different too, so read the label on your brand and do some research if you want to see how it could have happened, but dont panic and speak with your doctor and partner about your options.

Good luck in whatever choices you make :o)

I think everyone has effectively answered your question about how this could happen given the natural margin of error of any bc method. However, I would add that it is critical to get confirmation of whether or not you are actually pregnant from a physician. There are a multitude of reasons why prenatal care is so important and I won't bore you with all of them. However, I wouldn't alarm your BF until you get that confirmation. You might get his hopes up (or down, depending on his view of this) unecessarily.

Pregnancy tests can be either falsely positive or falsely negative. It's rare...very rare, but they can be. The only truly accurate test you can take is a blood test at the doctor's office. They can do a standard blood test or a quantitative blood test which gives even more accurate information on your pregnancy.

Best wishes that you receive the news you most hope for!

Well first of all, sending you good wishes, because this must be a shock for you. You deserve to have lots of support to help you through this, so please confide in someone you trust. I'd also suggest you go to see your doctor and talk it through.

Unfortunately, the pill is not 100 per cent effective for everyone, so there is a chance that this is the case for you.

If so, your partner needs to use contraception too. This could be a good idea anyway, to keep you safe from sexually transmitted disease.

It could possibly be that the pregnancy test is wrong - so don't panic until your doctor confirms it.

Good luck - I hope it all works out in the best possible way.

First of all, most responders are correct when saying that the pill isn't 100% effective. I believe it's 98% or 99%. But a home pregnancy test will get false negatives, but not false positives, unless that test is the rare defective one. Take another test to make sure and if that one comes up positive then you are preggers. Get yourself to the Dr, because the pill isn't that healthy for a fetus.

I am living proof that sometimes the pill just don't work. It is only something like 97% effective when used correctly. The only way for you to say there is no way for you to be pregnant is for you to not have sex. Another possibility is that you're just late and you misread the test results. Its a lot easier to read a false positive on those then most people think.

I have got a 16 year old son who is a result of me taking the pill, like you I hadn't missed a pill or been ill, hope everything goes ok for you, and after the shock has wore off (it took quite a few weeks for this with me) you'll feel just great.

I was also on the pill and fell pregnant the pill is only 97% effective eventhough they tell you its 99.9% effective.
I was on the pill for a year before i fell pregnant they say your suppose to get your pill reviewed by your gp every so many months maybe this is why pregnancy happens while on the pill.

Anyways good luck with it all

No contraception is 100% safe that's why you are reccomended to use condoms together with the pill. Have you taken your pill at the same time every day as this also can make you more or less safe.

The pill is not 100% effective. Go to a doctor to be sure, maybe the test you took was inaccurate. Best of luck.
