The Academy awards is the title of the ceremony, the Oscar is the award they give to the winners.
It may be confusing but someone decided it would be a good idea to have two names.

Its actual name is the "Academy Awards". Oscar is a slang nickname given to it by someone backstage who, as the story goes, claimed the Statue looked like his Uncle Oscar. The name stuck and thats why the statue (and sometimes the award itself) is called an Oscar.

I believe that the official name for the ceremony is "The Academy Awards" but the name of the actual award (statue) is "Oscar". People just shorten the name to "The Oscars".

It is really called the Academy Awards.
The term Oscars started when one of the makers of the statue said that the statue looks like her uncle Oscar

It is not called the Oscars. This is the name of the statue that people recieve when they win. It is called Oscar. It is like calling the World Series baseball. or the SuperBowl football. People just call it the Oscars.
