It depends. For future reference, thats always a good question to ask in the "any questions" bit at the end of the interview :-)

It depends on how many other people they are interviewing.
It is always best to ask at the end of an interview when you might expect to hear back. (you've mentioned they said by the end of the week - I assume you mean this week and not last?)
If you ring too early they could get annoyed. I would wait until lunchtime on Friday, if you haven't heard back, then ring them.
Sometimes companies don't mean to take so long, it depends how busy the senior managers are etc, and how they have structured all the interviews they are doing.
In any case, the best of luck to you in getting the job!

What is the usual amount of time to wait for a decision following a job interview? I would say immediately afterwards. The very next day tops.

It depends on the size of the business. I work for a small CPA firm and when the boss took on extra help for tax season he did his three interviews on Wednesday evening and Thursday. He called everyone on the Friday.
Larger firms should not take more than a week. If they do, it is either because you were second choice or because the are disorganized. In either case, would you then be sure you really want to work for them?

If they said a week, and you still haven't heard anything during that time, then call them to see if the decision is made. There are so many factors in making the decision that could hold it up.

Around about a week. Although these days people are so impolite, job agencies in particular, if you have been rejected they sometimes don't even bother telling you.

If they don't call you today I'd say call them tomorrow. Sometimes employers will wait for you to call just to see how much you want the job
