You always lose points when you ask a question. I think it costs you 5 points. It seems like a stupid rule but it's probably to encourage people to ask serious questions.

It always costs points to ask a question, that is how this site works. Everytime you answer a question, vote or have your answer picked as the best, you will receive points, but it costs to ask a question. By doing this, it helps to limit the number of question someone asks each day, to avoid repeated posts and/or spam. And once you use all your points, you will need to contribute to Yahoo! Answers to earn more points, which will mean that more people are answering questions and helping the questioners.

As tech_fanatic said it's just the way Y! has it, but if you pick a best answer for your question (instead of letting others pick it for you) then you will receive 3points, so really you only lose 2.

Techfanatic has the perfect answer, however, I am wondering why you posted this in "Travel> United States> Orlando".
