You have done a mistake not asking the CD, what if you found later it is a pirated copy of vista , neither you will be able to show bill for windows vista to proof you have bought from vendor, nor you have the CD with you.
Local vendors like arcamax india are cheating people left and right using this trick

with windows vista the thing which gonna happen with back up is it will be switched on to the previous version of OS installed on it like windows xp and actually it wont be the vista back up . don't do it if you want Vista on your laptop working well.
your laptop would be on warranty right now just call the guys you bought your laptop from if have any problem. and you should request them about the OS back up disk , they might not provide you the actual one but will provide you a copy if you are good in talking.

the basic thing you should worry about right now should be the hardware section not the softwares if you bought a new laptop
just test the drive speed , graphic competence's , pixels etc.

In all probablility you won't get a MS Vista disk with a new PC but you should have a manufacturer's restore CD which will restore your system to the way it was when it was supplied i.e. Vista installed along with the appropriate drivers. Sometimes the drivers CD is separate.

No, I think the backup probably just backs up your settings and files you download or create. If you bought the laptop new from a shop or online you should probably have been given a Windows CD...

If you need to restore backed up data you need Windows to be running to do it.

check the laptop carefully...alot of times the laptop manufacturer is too cheap to provide a restore disc and expects you to make it yourself. the software can be embedded and sometimes a software command will popup or be available on the restore side. you might want to check with the manufacturer website to see if thats the case...good luck.
