I don't worship money but I'd be a fool not to recognise that I need it to live. I find it interesting that there's such a widely held belief that high earners aren't really happy and must have achieved it at the expense of something else. Perhaps it's just wishful thinking!
I can't speak for anyone else but that's not true for me. I have my head screwed on and I know what's important in my life. The reason I want to do well at work (a career instead of a job, promotion instead of no promotion, big pay rise instead of inflation pay rise and so on) is because I have to be there whether I like it or not because I need to pay my bills, so since I'm there anyway I might as well do something that gives me a bit of status, that challenges me, that I enjoy, and that pays well.
Of course that's not strictly true about having to be there, since my firm has recently brought in flexible working. When my salary gets high enough that I can comfortably live on 80% of my pay while still being able to make pension contributions etc, then I will go on a four-day week. If I ever get to the stage where I can can live on 60%, I can go on a three-day week. And I even have one eye on early retirement, if things go really well.
But in order to do any of that, I have to put some time and effort in to career development. Nobody is going to give me a 25% (never mind 66%) pay rise in the next five years without a good reason.
So while you might look at me from the outside and think that I "just live to work" and therefore am a sad loser when it comes to what really matters, you'd be making a wrong assumption. We all only really see snapshots of other people, we see how they appear to be in one aspect of their lives at one point in their lives. The full story is always different.

Unfortunately yes. Money seems to be an all consuming obsession with people these days. The problem is that the economy/inflation makes it hard not to chase the almighty dollar. Work, transport, entertainment, the food we eat and pretty much everything right down to the clothes on our backs all come down to the pursuit of more money.
Some people aren't like this, but at a great sacrifice to themselves. You will find that most people who are happy with what they are doing aren't exactly living in the lap of luxury and most people who live more ostentatiously are chasing money to the point where they are consumed by stress and at a risk to their own physical health and well-being.
Obviously this isn't the case with everybody, but money and the ability to earn more of it seems to be the driving force behind most of mankind these days.
