Most importantly, remember the old saying we call "The Golden Rule"? Treat others the way you would like them to treat you.
If this ONE rule were ALWAYS obeyed by EVERYONE, then NO other rules would ever be necessary!!!!!
There is NO substitute for thoughtfullness and consideration. THINK of their feelings BEFORE opening your mouth to speak - WHATEVER the situation!!!
When they make mistakes, remember how YOU feel when YOU make a mistake. (Often it is the times when we - or they - are the least lovable that we - or they - really NEED love the most.)
Certainly, children need to understand that their actions have consequences, but those consequences should be fair, just, never fueled by anger and should emphasize the repairing of the damage done over the punishing for it..

When things are going right, think about how to enhance everyone's enjoyment of life, and when things are going wrong, think about how to restore it.
ALWAYS precede any action toward others (be they close loved-ones or strangers) with the thought "What would I want from them if our positions were reversed?" Then act accordingly (within bounds of common sense, of course.)

Helping them to achieve greatness at what they are already good at. Elevating their self-esteem. Protecting them from yourself, and they protecting you from them. Cohesion as a unit, while respecting extreme degrees of separation in style. Don't expect Mozart from the guitar player, but expect a very good guitar player.Acknowledge progress at all levels. Don't expect a person to be even marginal at something they are horrible at even when they try.
