No it's wrong BUT there are more robberies and car stealings than anywhere in France.

Nice is a relatively safe place as is France generally.

But times have been changing and despite the often very vocal claims that it is safer than the United States (apparently a point of pride amongst many Europeans) the fact is that a variety of sources can confirm that this is not necessarily so.

In fact, the overall crime rate is actually a bit higher in France than in the United States. The rate for all index offenses combined, according to Interpol, was 4434.51 per 100,000 for France compared with 4123.97 for USA..

And while the murder rate in France is lower than in the USA (4.07 to 5.51) the difference is actually, as you see, marginal.

As in the United States, crime is heaviest in areas with racial minorities and Nice, on the Mediterranean coast, has a heavy concentration of North African Muslims who are largely disaffected and increasingly violent and criminal. You should keep this in mind and act accordingly.

I've heard the same too but I did not encounter any problems the times I was there nor do I know anyone personally who has.

Exercise precautions as you would in any other cities, especially a tourist location like Nice .
